Weāve all been there. Youāre in class, trying to keep up. The music plays, your partner is waiting, the instructor is already on the next 8-countāand youāre just⦠surviving. Your brain is working overtime trying to remember, āWas it left-right-slide or right-left-turn?āAnd suddenly, dance becomes math. Not magic.
So, letās talk about it.
The Trap of Memorizing Over Feeling
Learning a new dance style can be overwhelming. But somewhere along the way, many dancers fall into the trap of focusing only on the steps. They move, but theyāre not dancing. Their body goes through the motions, but their energy, expression, and presence are missing.Itās like reading poetry without feeling the words. Technically correct, emotionally empty.
Signs Youāre Just Counting Steps:
You panic when the music starts.
You only feel āsafeā when the instructor is leading.
Your body feels stiff, disconnected, or overly focused on technique.
Youāre not even hearing the music ā just internal numbers: ā1, 2, 3, 4ā¦ā
Youāre more concerned about being perfect than being present.
Sound familiar?
Why This Happens:
Fear of getting it wrong
Overthinking instead of allowing muscle memory
Disconnection from the music or your own body
Pressure to perform vs permission to express
How to Break Free (and Start Actually Dancing):
š„ 1. Feel Before You CountĀ Turn on music. Donāt move. Just listen. Let it hit you. Let it affect your mood, your energy. Then allow your body to respondāwithout choreography.
š„ 2. Less Is MoreĀ Forget 8-count patterns for a moment. Can you express yourself with just 2 steps? A weight shift? A body roll? Simplicity often reveals more soul.
š„ 3. Connect With the "Why"Ā Why are you dancing? To express? To escape? To connect? When you remember your reason, the movements become real again.
š„ 4. Embody, Donāt Just ExecuteĀ A hip roll can be sensual or lazy. A step forward can be powerful or passive. Start thinking about the qualityĀ of your movement, not just its accuracy.
š„ 5. Breathe. Relax. Be Seen.We often hide in the steps. But your real magic? It lives in your presence. Let your chest open. Let your eyes shine. Let your story leak through your body.
The Shift Is Subtle⦠But Powerful
When you stop counting and start dancing, people notice.Youāll hear it in compliments:āYou looked like you were feeling it!āāYou moved with so much intention!āāYou werenāt just dancing⦠you were living it.ā
And youāll feel it, too.DanceĀ becomes more than movement.ItĀ becomes medicine. Art. Power. Freedom.
